Project Title: Community Spirit Awakens: Retro Halloween Concept for "Buurt Diner"
Project Overview: A poster design created to increase participation in the "Buurt Diner" (Neighborhood Dinner) event organized by SET-Ijburg, blending a Halloween theme with a nostalgic and inviting tone. The aim was to evoke a "kom gezellig" (come join the fun) feeling, a warm community invitation, rather than a scary image.
1. The Challenge (The Brief)
The client's goal was simple: to announce their weekly "Buurt Diner" held every Thursday, accessible to everyone on a donation basis. This time, however, they wanted to leverage the upcoming Halloween season. The challenge was how to incorporate the "Halloween" theme while preserving the intimate nature of the event—"free entry," "donation-based," and "family-friendly." It needed to feel "gezellig" (Dutch for 'cozy, pleasant, comfortable') rather than cold or frightening.

2. The Concept and Strategy (The Concept)
Instead of relying on horror cinema clichés, we drew inspiration from 1970s cartoons and classic "Trick or Treat" posters. Our strategy was built on "nostalgia" and "fun."
At the heart of the design, we placed a character that embodied the friendly spirit of the event: a jovial, walking pumpkin tipping its hat like a gentleman. This character became a visual metaphor for the "everyone is invited" message. Supporting elements like "cute" rather than "scary" ghosts, bats, and spiders enriched the composition, reinforcing the main character's charm.

3. The Design Execution (The Execution)
Color Palette: A limited yet striking color palette was chosen. Vibrant orange, a Halloween signature, injected energy, while the deep purple background added a thematic mystery and made the orange pop. Cream (off-white) and black were used to balance the contrast and reinforce the retro vibe.
Typography: The message needed to be clear and attention-grabbing. The bold, "funky," and rounded font used for the title ("Buurt Diner") immediately established the poster's retro and playful character. For informational text, a more legible yet harmoniously designed modern sans-serif font was chosen to create visual hierarchy.
Texture and Details: We wanted to avoid a sterile digital look. A subtle "grain" (noise) texture applied to the entire surface gave it the feel of an old, printed poster. This texture made the design appear more "tactile" and inviting.
4. The Outcome (The Outcome)
The resulting design transformed a simple Thursday dinner announcement into an invitation for a special, unmissable event. This visual language, instantly eye-catching in social media feeds, successfully conveyed the "community-focused," "fun," and "donation-based" friendly spirit of the event. The design clearly communicated to its target audience: "This isn't a boring obligation; it's a delightful get-together."
